US-Flag Product and Chemical Carriers

The US-flag domestic trade in petroleum products and chemicals is now carried by only 29 self-propelled ships, with a total capacity of about 1.3 million deadweight tons, as shown below: all but three of these ships are double-hulled.  Since the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA 90) was enacted, 86 product and chemical carriers have been withdrawn from the trade: to see a table listing them, click here.

In addition to the Jones Act fleet, there are five US-flag product carriers engaged in foreign trade.
