Directory of U.S. Shipyards

Please note the following revised definitions of shipyard categories:

B L      A Builder of Large oceangoing naval and commercial ships, fully facilitized, with in-house design capabilities.

B M    A Builder of Mid-sized oceangoing commercial ships, rigs, barges, etc., fully facilitized, with in-house design capabilities.

B S      A Builder of Small ships, boats and barges, for coastal or inland service, with limited facilities and capabilities.

B A     A Builder of Aluminum boats for commercial and/or governmental use.

B Y     A Builder of Yachts, i.e., custom-designed and built yachts that are at least 100 feet in length.

R L     A Repairer of Large ships, i.e., one capable of dry-docking an oceangoing vessel of at least Panamax beam (106 feet).

R S     A Repairer of Small ships, boats and barges, with dry-docking capability.

R T     A Repairer with Topside capability only,  i.e., without any dry-docking capability.

Please also note that the table does NOT include:

(1)    Shipyards that only build or repair pleasure craft (other than megayachts) and/or non-commercial fishing vessels;

(2)    Shipyards that are essentially manufacturers, with no waterfront operations; and

(3)    Shipyards that are essentially maintenance departments for their parent companies.
