Please note the following definitions of shipyard categories:

Builders:

L      A builder of Large oceangoing naval and/or commercial ships; a very large, fully facilitized shipyard, with extensive in-house design capabilities.

M    A builder of Mid-sized oceangoing ships, rigs, oceangoing barges, etc.; a mid-sized, fully facilitized shipyard, with in-house design capabilities.

S      A builder of Small ships, boats and barges, for coastal or inland service; a shipyard with limited facilities and capabilities.

A     A builder of Aluminum boats for commercial and/or governmental use.

Y     A builder of Yachts, i.e., custom-designed and custom-built yachts that are generally at least 75 feet in length.

Repairers:

L     A repairer of Large ships, i.e., one capable of dry-docking an oceangoing vessel of at least Panamax beam (106 feet).

S     A repairer of Small ships, boats and barges, with dry-docking capability.

T     A repairer with Topside capability only,  i.e., without any dry-docking capability.

Please also note that the table does NOT include:

(1)    Shipyards that only build or repair small pleasure craft and/or non-commercial fishing vessels;

(2)    Shipyards that are essentially manufacturers or machine shops, with no waterfront operations; and

(3)    Shipyards that are essentially maintenance departments for their parent companies.
