T. S. Marvel Shipbuilding, Newburgh NY

(previously Ward, Stanton & Co. [1876-1885], James Bigler [1885-1891], later Tank Shipbuilding Co. [1916-1921], Harry A. Marvel Co. [1922-1945], Steel Style [1976-1982], now Steelways, Inc.)

Most recent update: October 12, 2017.

Ward, Stanton & Co. was started by Luther C. Ward and Samuel Stanton, formerly of Highland Furnace and Washington Iron Works, in 1876 and was famous for the construction of several very fine yachts.  It failed in 1885 as a result of an uninsured fire on two ferries that were under construction. The unfinished vessels and a portion of the site were sold to James Bigler, who operated it until 1891, while T. S. Marvel & Co. started operations on the balance of the site and continued there until the eve of the First World War. The Marvel company failed in 1914 and in 1916 the site was leased to the Tank Shipbuilding Corporation who operated it until 1921.  The Marvel family re-acquired the site in 1922 and operated it until the end of WWII, when it was closed again, lying idle for many years until 1976, when it reopened as Steel Style Inc., (now Steelways Inc.), an industrail fabricator. The yard was located on South Water Street, near the foot of South William Street: see the site from the air on Google here.  There are a few ships in the table below that are listed in the records as having been built elsewhere: if anyone can provide any additions or corrections, please send them to me at timcolton@aol.com
