Providence Engineering Corp. was a major 19th-century manufacturer of engines, based in Providence RI.  It contracted to build ten tugs for the U.S. Shipping Board, subcontracting the shipyard work to Kyle & Purdy, on City Island NY, and shipping the engines down from Providence.
