NEWBURGH SHIPYARDS

Newburgh NY

Most recent update: August 24, 2021.

Newburgh Shipyards, Inc., was started in 1918 by Thomas C. Desmond for the WWI emergency shipbuilding program and apparently closed three years later.  President Roosevelt attended the launch of Hull #1.  The yard was on Water Street, just south of Verplank Avenue and the Global tank farm: you can see the site from the air on Google here.  The large building with the rusty roof was the main fab. shop and the four building berths were in the open area just to the south.  The facility was briefly reused in WWII by Chicago Bridge, who built some floating docks there.  More recently, it was operated by Steel Style Inc. and its successor, Steelways Shipyard, as an adjunct to their main yard, the former T. S. Marvel Shipyard.  If anyone can add to the table below, please e-mail me at timcolton@aol.com.
