Private-Sector Shipyards that Built Ships for the U.S. Maritime Commission

This group of tables covers all those shipyards that built self-propelled merchant ships under contract to the U.S. Maritime Commission.  Their principal products were Liberty ships, Victory ships and T2 tankers, but they also built a wide variety of small merchant vessels and naval auxiliaries.  Many of these shipyards also built naval ships under contract to the Department of the Navy, and, as a result, also appear in the table of Private-Sector Shipyards That Built Ships for the U.S. Navy in WWII.  Some of the older shipyards, including Bethlehem Quincy, Bethlehem Sparrows Point, New York Ship, Newport News and Sun Shipbuilding, also built ships for private-sector customers.  There is, however, only one table for each shipyard, in order to present each shipyard's total output.

Several shipyards have breaks in their series of hull numbers.  These do not necessarily indicate that ships are missing from the list, since not all shipbuilders followed a rigorously sequential system of hull numbering.  The missing numbers may have been used for the small ships and craft, which are being added as the data become available: the data sources for these vessels do not include shipyard hull numbers.
