Only 329 Coast Guard vessels were built new during WWII, in only 17 shipyards: most of the ships and boats in the Coast Guard's very large fleet were either built for the Navy, the Army or the Maritime Commission and transferred to the Coast Guard or converted from fishing vessels, yachts and other private-sector vessels.
