Ocean Minesweepers (AM)

In the years between the wars, the Navy built 57 minesweepers, most of which were modified tugs.  During the war, however, 251 steel-hulled minesweepers were built in 20 shipyards (including one in Canada).  There were three basic designs - the 221-foot, 18-knot  "Auk" class, the 185-foot, 15-knot "Admirable" class and the 174-foot, 16-knot "Adroit" class, all 18 of which were converted to sub chasers.
