Prior to WWII, almost all the Navy's tugs were acquired from the private-sector. During WWII, however, 238 ocean tugs were built in 22 shipyards and boatyards. There were 69 of the 205-foot, 16-knot, steel-hulled ATFs, in four groups - 13 of the "Navajo" class, 15 of the "Bannock" class, 23 of the "Abnaki" class and 18 of the "Achomawi" class; there were 89 of the 143-foot, 13-knot "Sotoyomo" class steel-hulled ATAs, all but 4 of them built by Levingston Shipbuilding and its sister company, Gulfport Shipbuilding, in southeast Texas; and there were 80 of the 165-foot, 12-knot, unnamed wooden-hulled ATRs. The fates of these workhorse vessels are not well documented: please send any additions and corrections to tim@coltoncompany.com.
