The predecessor of Kyle & Purdy was Purdy & Collison, who operated at Morris Heights from about 1890 until they bought the Archibald Robertson shipyard at City Island and renamed it City Island Shipbuilding. In 1910, Purdy & Collison folded and was reorganized and renamed Kyle & Purdy. The ten tugs that it built for the U.S. Shipping Board during WWI were on a subcontract from Providence Engineering Works, which provided the engines. In 1923, Kyle & Purdy became the T. A. Kyle Shipyard and in 1927 bought out the adjacent J. P. Hawkins Shipyard and moved. The old yard then became the Lyon-Tuttle Shipyard and later Murphy Shipyard. It is now occupied by International Underwater Contractors. If anyone can provide any information about this yard and the boats it built, please e-mail timcolton@aol.com.
