Gibbs Gas Engine, Jacksonville FL
(later Aerojet-General and Jacksonville Shipyards, Inc.)
Most recent update: July 16, 2011.
Gibbs Gas Engine Company was founded in the early years of the 20th century and was a prolific builder of small vessels in both WWI and WWII. It was sold to Aerojet-General in 1964 and then to Fruehauf Corp. in 1967. Fruehauf renamed it Jacksonville Shipyards and made it exclusively a repair yard. The yard was located at 750 E. Bay Street, in downtown Jacksonville: it closed in 1989 and Fruehauf sold its two large floating dry-docks to the Arab Ship Repair Yard, (ASRY), in Bahrain. The site is now residential/commercial: see it from the air on Google here. If anyone can fill any of the gaps in the table below, please e-mail me at timcolton@aol.com.
