DESCO Marine, Inc., St. Augustine FL - Wooden Hulls 1601 onwards

Diesel Engine Sales Company, or DESCO, was one of the most prolific builders of fishing boats.  The yard, which was on the San Sebastian River, was started in 1944 and closed in 1985.  See the shipyard site from the air on Google here.  In later years, DESCO had two separate production operations within the one facility and had two different series of hull numbers going in parallel, which might have been confusing but, by the time they started the series for fiberglass boats, the series for wooden boats was already up to about 1800.  Because of the company's huge output, I have divided it into four tables.  This table covers wooden hulls 1601 onwards; see the table for wooden hulls 1 through 800 here, the table for wooden hulls 801 through 1600 here and the table for FRP hulls here.  Almost all these boats were standard 99-GT, 67-foot shrimpers.  Many thanks to John Versaggi, of the Versaggi Shrimp Company family, who sent me a copy of the program for the launching of Hull 1600, on April 19, 1969, autographed by that great Florida celebrity, Anita Bryant: it includes a list of all 1600 boats built in the preceding 25 years.  If anyone can fill any of the many gaps in this table, please e-mail me at timcolton@aol.com.
