Dachel-Carter Shipbuilding, Benton Harbor MI
Most recent update: December 22, 2008.
Dachel-Carter was started in 1915 by two former employees of a Benton Harbor shipyard that failed. In the late 1930s, it was saved from closing by new investors and had a busy WWII, growing to over 600 employees, although the Navy was never satisfied with its performance. It folded after the war and the yard was leased to Truscott Boat, but that company failed in 1948. Since hen the site has been a machining plant for Whirlpool Corporation. See it from the air on Google here. If anyone can provide any information about the boats that it built, please e-mail it to me at timcolton@aol.com.
