Consolidated Steel, Long Beach and Wilmington CA

Most recent update: January 23, 2012.

Consolidated Steel Corporation was formed in 1929 from the amalgamation of Llewellyn Iron Works, Baker Iron Works and Union Iron Works.  It started its shipbuilding operation at a leased shipyard in Long Beach, which was the former Craig Shipbuilding, but built a wholly new shipyard in Wilmington in 1941, with four ways, in the second wave of shipbuilding expansion, with $13mm invested by the USMC.  Four more ways were added in the third wave of shipbuilding expansion and, at its peak, the Wilmington shipyard employed 12,000 people.  Both shipyards were fed with prefabricated steel and sub-assemblies from the company's main plant in Mayfield.  After the war the two shipyards were liquidated.  The Long Beach yard was on the west side of Channel Three of the Inner Harbor, although its full extent is not clear.  The Wilmington yard was where the Port of Los Angeles' TraPac container terminal is now.  See the site from the air on Google here

In addition to these two big-ship yards, Consolidated bought Ackerman Boat Works, in 1943.  This yard was in Newport Beach and was building 96-foot TPs and 47-foot MTLs for the Army: after the war, it built some commercial vessels but Consolidated sold it back to Ackerman in 1947.

Consolidated used a single hull number system for all its yards, including the one in Orange TX, but there are still many gaps in the sequence.  It is known that they also built 761 LCMs at the Mayfield plant, but it is not clear how these boats correspond to the gaps in the sequence of hull numbers.  They have been allocated below in the way that makes most sense to us, based on the limited data.  If anyone can add to the table below, please e-mail your info to timcolton@aol.com.
