Consolidated Steel Corporation of Texas was a subsidiary of the Los Angeles-based company, operating a large Navy-financed shipyard for the construction of surface combatants and an adjacent small shipyard for the construction of tugs and barges. The small shipyard was the former Orange Car & Steel Co., which had previously been called Southern Dry Dock & Shipbuilding Co. At its peak, Consolidated employed 20,000 people, more than live in Orange even today. After the war the yard reverted to being a fabricator and was for many years a division of U.S. Steel. It is now a shipyard again, as a division of Signal International. See it from the air on Google here.
The USS Orleck (DD 886) has been restored and is now a museum in Lake Charles LA, which is not Orange, but it's close by. Visit her at her berth at 604 North Enterprise Boulevard, or on the web at www.ussorleck.org
Consolidated used a single hull numbering system for both this yard and the ones in California, but there are still many gaps in the sequence. If anyone can fill any of these gaps or add anything to the table below, please e-mail your info to timcolton@aol.com.
