California Shipbuilding, or CalShip, was one of the original nine emergency yards, built with 8 ways in 1940 by Todd and Kaiser, with $27mm from the USMC: Kaiser bought Todd out in 1942. The yard's 8 ways were increased to 14 in the second wave of shipbuilding expansion and, at its peak, CalShip employed 40,000 people. After the war, the yard was liquidated: its site was roughly where the dry bulk cargo terminal at Berths 212 and 213 of the Port of Los Angeles is now, at the west end of New Dock Street: see it from the air on Google here.
