Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyards, Inc., Baltimore MD

Bethlehem-Fairfield was one of the original nine emergency yards, built with 13 ways in 1940, with $33mm from the USMC.  Its 13 ways were increased to 16 in the second wave of shipbuilding expansion and at its peak the yard had 27,000 employees.  The 1300-acre yard was located in the Fairfield section of Baltimore, extending from where the south end of the Harbor Tunnel is now all the way to the southern end of East Brooklyn.  It was closed at the end of the war and its site has since been developed by the Maryland Ports Administration as an automobile import terminal and as three major oil terminals.  See the site from the air on Google here.  Note that Hull # 2062, the "John W. Brown", has been completely restored and is operational.  Visit her at her berth at Pier 1, on Clinton Street, in downtown Baltimore, or on the web at www.liberty-ship.com
