American Bridge Company, Pittsburgh PA

The American Bridge Company was founded in 1900 and was a subsidiary of United States Steel until it was spun off in 1987.  In WWI, it built fabricated sections of standard-design cargo ships assembled at the ship factories on the Atlantic Coast - Hog Island, Merchant Shipbuilding and Submarine Boat.  The company's Pittsburgh yard was building barges for the Army when the Navy requisitioned it in 1942 and invested $9mm in its improvement.  In addition to building LSTs, American Bridge also built structural components for 43 aircraft carriers and 81 cargo ships.  After the war it returned to building bridges.
