Manitowoc Shipbuilding Corp., Manitowoc WI

Manitowoc Shipbuilding was originally established in 1902, as Manitowoc Dry Dock Co., in the shipyard that had originally been developed by Burger & Burger.  It specialized in Great Lakes vessels.  In WWII, it converted to building submarines and, at its peak, employed 7,000 people.  You could see it from the air on Google here, but the picture is hopelessly fuzzy.  The shipyard reverted to merchant shipbuilding after the war, but closed in 1968, when Manitowoc acquired Christy Corporation (formerly Leathem D. Smith Shipbuilding) and Sturgeon Bay Shipbuilding, adjoining yards in Sturgeon Bay, and combined them into one yard, which it renamed Bay Shipbuilding.
