Manitowoc Shipbuilding Corporation was originally established in 1902, as Manitowoc Dry Dock Co., in the shipyard that had been developed in 1863 by Burger & Burger. In WWII, it switched from building merchant ships to building submarines and, at its peak, employed 7,000 people and occupied the whole of the Manitowoc River peninsula: see the site from the air on Google here. (The submarines were delivered to the Navy in New Orleans.) The shipyard reverted to merchant shipbuilding after the war, but closed in 1968, when Manitowoc acquired Christy Corporation (formerly Leathem D. Smith Shipbuilding) and Sturgeon Bay Shipbuilding, adjoining yards in Sturgeon Bay, and combined them into one yard, which it renamed Bay Shipbuilding.
