Manitowoc Shipbuilding, Manitowoc WI

Most recent update: June 25, 2012.

Manitowoc Shipbuilding was originally established in 1902, by Charles C. West and Elias Gunnell, as Manitowoc Dry Dock Co., in the shipyard that had been developed in 1863 by Burger & Burger and which had been a repair yard since 1871.  In 1910 it became Manitowoc Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., and in 1916 Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co.  In WWII, it switched from building merchant ships to building submarines and, at its peak, employed 7,000 people and occupied the whole of the Manitowoc River peninsula: see the site from the air on Google here.  The shipyard reverted to merchant shipbuilding after the war, becoming Manitowoc Shipbuilding Inc. in 1952, but stopped building ships in 1968, when Manitowoc acquired Christy Corporation (formerly Leathem D. Smith Shipbuilding) and Sturgeon Bay Shipbuilding, adjoining yards in Sturgeon Bay, and combined them into one yard, which it renamed Bay Shipbuilding.  Manitowoc Shipbuilding closed in 1972.
