Gulfport Shipbuilding, Port Arthur TX
(formerly Gulfport Boiler & Welding Works)
Most recent update: February 10, 2011.
Gulfport Boiler & Welding Works, Inc., was established in the 1930s. It became a leading builder of ocean tugs in WWII and continued in that market after the war. It was renamed Gulfport Shipbuilding Corporation after the war and was acquired by Levingston Shipbuilding in 1970. It closed in 1985, after the offshore market collapsed. The yard was located on land leased from the Kansas City & Southern Railroad, between the Port of Port Arthur and the bridge to Pleasure Island. The site has now been absorbed into the Port of Port Arthur but lies idle. See what's left from the air on Google here.
