The American Ship Building Company, Cleveland OH

(formerly Globe Iron Works [1882-1899] and Cleveland Shipbuilding [1888-1899])

Globe Iron Works was organized in 1853 by Henry Coffinberry, James Wallace and two others, but did not begin building ships until 1880.  In 1887, they acquired the Cleveland Steam Furnace Company and started a second shipyard - Cleveland Shipbuilding - on its site.  In 1897, they built a third shipyard, in Lorain.  In 1898, Wallace led the campaign to rationalize shipbuilding on the Great Lakes, forming The American Ship Building Company and acquiring the competing shipyards in Buffalo NY, Chicago IL, Detroit MI, Superior WI, Toledo OH and West Bay City MI.
