Marinette Marine Corp., Marinette WI

Most recent update: September 29, 2011.

Marinette Marine was established in 1942 and started by building five wooden barges and six wooden tugs for the war effort.  After the war, it produced hundreds of small landing craft and work boats, and has grown into being a sophisticated mid-sized shipbuilder.  The records are unclear as to exactly how many boats Marinette has built for the Navy and even less clear on what happened to them all: if anyone can help with this challenge, please send your info to me at timcolton@aol.com.  The company had a traditional sequential hull numbering system until the mid-70s, when it switched to a four-digit system in which the first two digits were the contract year: then in the early 90s, it switched to its present three-digit system, in which the first digit apparently represents the type of vessel.  Marinette was privately held until Manitowoc Corp. bought it in 1999: Manitowoc sold its Marine Group, which also included Bay Shipbuilding and Cleveland Ship Repair, to the state-owned Italian shipbuilding group, Fincantieri, at the end of 2008 and it is now called Fincantieri Marine Group.  Visit the shipyard at their new and vastly improved web site - www.marinettemarine.com - and see it from the air on Google here.
