Ingalls Shipbuilding, Pascagoula MS
Ingalls Pascagoula was developed by Ingalls Iron Works in 1939, on the east bank of the Pascagoula River. It was built in anticipation of the USMC long-range shipbuilding program and its four ways were increased to six in the third wave of shipbuilding expansion, with $7mm from the USMC and $4mm from the Navy. The yard continued in operation after the war, was sold to Litton Industries in 1961 and significantly enlarged in the 1960s, with the aid of the State of Mississippi, creating the "shipyard of the future" on the west bank of the river. Litton was bought by Northrop Grumman in 2001 and Ingalls was integrated with Avondale as Northrop Grumman Ship Systems. In 2008, Ship Systems was integrated with Newport News as Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding. Visit the shipyard at www.ss.northropgrumman.com and see it from the air on Google here.
This table is believed to be close to complete, because Ingalls used to list its record on its web site (no longer, presumably thanks to Northrop Grumman). The earlier Ingalls' hull numbers were sequential through about 1200, but included the hull numbers used by Ingalls Iron Works in Decatur and Birmingham AL and jumped from about 600 to about 1000. Since about 1975, their hull numbers have run in disconnected series that loosely relate to the type of vessel. All very confusing.
