Liberty Ships - Part 1: EMC #s 1 thru 767

In less than four years, from the last day of December 1941 thru October 1945, 17 shipyards delivered 2,718 Liberty ships - the greatest shipbuilding achievement in history.  Contrary to popular belief, this was not all Henry Kaiser's doing.  Of the 17 yards, seven were managed by established shipbuilders, six by Kaiser and four by local interests with no experience of shipbuilding.  The first group had better productivity than did the Kaiser yards and the Kaiser yards had better productivity than the third group.
