Morton Engineering, Quebec QC

Most recent update: August 3, 2010.

This facility was located on the St. Charles River in Quebec City's Lower Town.  Originally founded in 1858 and owned by Alex Mackay & Company, it was leased by Quebec Shipbuilding & Repairing Company during WWI and used to build two wooden freighters for the British Government.  It was purchased in 1919 by W. J. Morton and incorporated in 1927 as Quebec Docking & Ship Repairing Company before changing its name to Morton Engineering & Drydock Company in 1928.  In 1937 the Canadian Navy ordered a minesweeper from the company and it later built corvettes, frigates, cargo vessels and coasters.  Wartime employment peaked at 2700 but the demands of war production exceeded the capability of the yard's management and the Canadian Government took over in July 1943 and operated it for the balance of the war.  The yard was sold to Hervé Baribeau in 1946, becoming St. Lawrence Metal and Marine Works Ltd.  It built its last ship in 1949.
